I think that it must be that he loved someone else, besides his wife or maybe instead of his wife, and that he lost that person, so maybe that other person married, or maybe she died. If I have to guess OP loved someone else his whole life but couldn't be with her, and now is too late to change things, being that what he means by losing the love of his life forever.
